DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: The Value of Time

Have you ever calculated how much of your life is spent trading time for money?

The average person will spend 90,000 hours of their life working. That's more than 10 YEARS of your life - if you worked 24 hours a day.

But here's the sobering reality most of us never question: when you stop showing up, the money stops too.

Our modern time-value equation

Most of us live with a simple formula that dictates our lives:

Time × Hourly Rate = Income

Whether you earn $15 an hour or $500, the formula remains unchanged. Your income is forever chained to the hours you physically work.

This creates an inescapable ceiling - there are only so many hours in a day, and only so many days in your life.

God's perspective on time

When Moses wrote, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom," he was acknowledging something profound: our time on earth is limited, and understanding this limitation is the beginning of wisdom.

God values our time differently than the world does.

While the world teaches us that ‘time equals money’, God's economy suggests that time is for:

  • Relationships that matter
  • Work that reflects His creative nature
  • Rest that renews our spirit
  • Service that extends His kingdom

None of these core purposes is primarily about accumulating wealth, yet our current time-money equation often leaves little room for them.

A moment of reflection

Take a few minutes to consider:

  1. How much of your time is currently dedicated solely to generating income?
  2. What important relationships or purposes might be receiving less time than they deserve?
  3. If your income weren't tied directly to your hours worked, how might you allocate your time differently?

A prayer for wisdom

Father, help me see time through Your eyes rather than the world's perspective. Give me wisdom to number my days and courage to question the equations that govern how I spend this precious gift of time. Show me paths that lead to both provision and purpose, that I might honor You with both my work and my rest.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
