How to Taste and See God's Goodness: Practical Ways for Your Family to Experience God's Presence and Notice His Daily Blessings

DAY 1 OF 3

Have you ever read a beautiful Bible verse but left wondering what it actually means?

Psalm 34:8 was like that for me.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8a)

It sounded poetic, even comforting. But also confusing. God is invisible. So how do you taste someone you can’t even see?

Here’s what I’ve learned: the first requirement for tasting God’s goodness is something you and I already have in abundant supply—need.

It’s believed that David wrote the Hebrew acrostic poem of Psalm 34 in response to a harrowing escape in 1 Samuel 21. Let’s set the scene:

  • David is on the run from Saul, who wants him dead.
  • He flees to Gath, but the people there have heard of David’s success in battle.
  • Fearing for his life, David pretends to be insane to avoid harm.
  • The king of Gath, Achish, lets him go.

Out of that terrifying experience, David writes Psalm 34—a song overflowing with praise and gratitude for God’s deliverance.

He describes a God who:

  • Hears
  • Saves
  • Delivers
  • And yes, tastes good.

Sounds odd, right? But stay with me.

David was desperate. Scared. In need. And that’s where he encountered the goodness of God.

Isn’t that often true for us too?

When the calendar is overbooked and everyone needs something.

When your child is struggling and you're not sure how to help.

When we’re stretched thin and feel like we’ve got nothing left to give—that’s when we discover that God is not just there, He is good.

But how do we taste Him?

David gave us clues:

  1. He looked to God in his need.
  2. He sought to live connected to God and in ways that pleased the Lord.

So, what about you?

Is there a struggle in your life right now where you need God to show up? Do you want to model for your children what it means to trust Him?

If so, you're ready to taste.

And here's how you start: slow down and eat.

When we don't believe something will satisfy us, we eat distracted.

My kids do this with their vitamins—shoving them in and walking off before the taste can register. They just want to get it over with.

I do it too. I eat meals behind the wheel or work through lunch. I know what it's like to eat but not pay enough attention to enjoy it.

The same can happen with God. We rush through quiet time or prayer, missing the full flavor of His presence and provision there with us.

But God wants to feed your soul. To meet you in your need. To engage in your life with you and with your family as only He can.

So today, take one intentional bite.

Pause. Pray. Breathe.
Tell God what you need. Reflect on His care.
Read Psalm 34 and let the words sit with you.
Linger instead of rushing on.

Come hungry. Taste and see. He is good.

Kid Connection: Try This

Play the Taste Test Challenge at an upcoming meal or snack time, where your kids taste their food blindfolded.

“What do you think it is? What flavors can you describe?” Then, after they guess: “Did you notice how paying attention and eating slowly helped you identify the flavors? Finding God's goodness works the same way—a lot of times we need to slow down to notice the good things He gives us. Makes sense right?"

Get ready for tomorrow, when we explore another way our senses can experience God, with exciting insight from a popular psychology experiment.
