Conversational Evangelism: How to Respond to 7 Common Questions From Nonbelievers

DAY 7 OF 7

7. Why is there not more than one God?

If someone asks this question, we can use the boomerang principle and ask, “In what way do you think an all-powerful God can have limitations?” and “What can limit an all-powerful God?” The answer, of course, to both questions is…absolutely nothing! The Bible teaches that God has the power to hold all things together (Colossians 1:17). The Bible clearly teaches that there is only one God.

“You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me?

No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.” (Isaiah 44:8b)

Now to demonstrate this point rationally and not just affirm that this is a biblical teaching, we can say the following: “If there were more than one eternal unlimited being, would they not have to differ in some way? To differ by nothing (as opposed to something) is the same as saying they do not differ at all. To differ by something, one would have to have a quality or property that the other would not possess. Then one would be God and the other would not. Therefore, there can be only one unlimited, unchanging, eternal God, not two or more.”

Conclusion

We can help our nonbelieving friends to take important steps in their journey to the cross by identifying two additional obstacles: obstacles in their understanding of Christianity and obstacles in their embracing of Christianity. We can also help them take steps to the cross by keeping in mind the four questions we want to ask and answer whenever we are asked hot-button questions like those we talk about in this plan. Those four questions are:

  • What is the question behind the question?
  • What are the terms we may need to clarify?
  • What is the truth we want them to understand?
  • What is a story or example we can use to help them grasp the truth?

We hope this plan has helped you as you continue your conversations with friends and loved ones about the reality of our awesome God.

Certain key questions or objections can often emerge from nonbelievers during evangelism conversations. Whether real or imaginary, they are barriers to reaching people for Christ. Our ready answers should tear down these obstacles to the Gospel while making sure nonbelievers don’t feel torn down as well. For the next seven days, let’s look at seven of the most common questions/objections that nonbelievers express.
