Acts 24

The trial before Felix is a glimpse into ancient Roman justice. The case for the prosecution is led by Tertullus, a lawyer. He presents Paul as an agitator, a persistent fellow, a ringleader, a stirrer of trouble "throughout the world" - all areas of political concern to Felix, whose authority he knew could be instantly removed by one Roman decree.

Paul (defending himself) proceeds to demolish all accusations with verifiable facts, and he portrays himself as a loyal and faithful Jew, whose faith in Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law. His speech is well constructed; historically and theologically accurate, politically aware, and personally true.

When Paul broaches the topics of justice, self-control, and the coming Judgement, Felix wants to close proceedings down. These were topics too close to home, perhaps! Felix then makes excuses to have chats with Paul over the next two years. He was obviously attracted to the Message of the Gospel, but not so attracted to the cost of commitment. And so, in order to leave his office with a fair testimonial, he leaves Paul in prison to be dealt with by his successor.

This lack of commitment is often a picture of society today and how people respond to the Message of Jesus. Christmas? A lot of glitter, gifts, and even a baby in a manger – yes, please. But Easter? A Man on a Cross and a Message of Repentance and surrender - no thanks. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

Heavenly Father, help me to be wholly committed to follow Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen.
