Holy Week: A Walk to the Cross

DAY 1 OF 8

The King On a Donkey

If you know football, you know Super Bowl weekend is a big deal. Crowds, cameras, parades, and hype—everyone expects the star players to make a grand entrance. Imagine if the MVP rode in on a rusty bicycle instead of pulling up in a luxury car. That’s what Jesus did when He entered Jerusalem.

Holy Week is the biggest week in history. It’s the week Jesus came to fulfill His mission—to save the world. Every moment, from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday, was part of God’s plan to bring salvation to all people.

It all started with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. People expected the Messiah to arrive like a powerful king, riding a warhorse, ready to take over. But Jesus chose a donkey. Why? Because He wasn’t coming to conquer with force—He was coming to bring peace.

In biblical times, kings rode horses when they came for war but rode donkeys when they came in peace. Jesus, the King of Kings, rode a donkey to show that His kingdom was different. He wasn’t about power—He was about love. He wasn’t about pride—He was about humility. He wasn’t about being served—He was about serving.

Philippians 2:6-7 tells us that even though Jesus was God, He humbled Himself to become a servant. The world teaches us to chase status and success, but Jesus flipped the script. His life showed that greatness comes through humility.

As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, crowds cheered, shouting “Hosanna!”—a word that means “Save us!” They laid palm branches on the ground, treating Him like royalty. But just days later, some of those same people would turn against Him, calling for His crucifixion. Jesus knew this would happen, yet He still came. He still rode in, knowing the suffering ahead. Because that’s what love does—it sacrifices for others.

Reflection Question:

Jesus chose humility over status. In what areas of your life do you need to follow His example—at school, at home, or with your friends? How can you serve instead of seeking attention?

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for showing me that true greatness comes from serving. Help me to choose humility over pride and love over status. Show me how to serve others the way you did. In Your name, Amen.
