Joel & Zephaniah: A Call to Return
The prophets Joel and Zephaniah spoke in different periods of Israel's history, yet their messages were strikingly similar: the Day of the Lord is coming — repent while there is still time. Both warned of impending judgment but also pointed to the hope of restoration for those who turned back to God.
Joel lived when a devastating locust plague swept through Judah, stripping the land bare and leaving the people in despair. He used this disaster as a prophetic warning — just as the locusts had consumed everything in sight, a greater judgment was coming if the people did not return to God (Joel 1:4-15). But Joel also held out hope: "The Lord says, 'Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts'" (Joel 2:12). If the people would repent, God promised to restore what had been lost and pour out His Spirit upon them (Joel 2:25-28).
Zephaniah, prophesying during the reign of King Josiah (640–609 BC), also warned of the coming Day of the Lord — not just for Judah, but for all nations. He declared that God's judgment would sweep away everything corrupt and wicked (Zephaniah 1:2-3). Yet his message was not without hope. He called the people to seek the Lord, to humble themselves, and to do what was right, saying, "Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you—protect you from his anger on that day of destruction" (Zephaniah 2:3). And for those who repented, Zephaniah painted a beautiful picture of restoration, where God rejoices over His people with singing and removes their shame (Zephaniah 3:17-20).
Joel and Zephaniah remind us that God's judgment is not about destruction alone — it is a call to repentance and restoration. The Day of the Lord is not just an event in ancient history; it is a reality we must still consider. God is both just and merciful, giving us every opportunity to return to Him. The question is, will we? Do we recognize the urgency of repentance, or do we assume we have more time? Joel and Zephaniah urge us not to wait. The time to seek the Lord is now.
Father, we hear Your call to return and do not want to ignore it. Forgive us for the ways we have strayed, for the times we have put off repentance, thinking there would always be more time. Soften our hearts to seek You earnestly, to live humbly, and to trust in Your mercy. Thank You that even in judgment, You offer hope. Help us walk in Your ways so we may know the joy of Your salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

The Minor Prophets are some of the most overlooked books of the Bible — yet their messages are just as urgent today as when they were first spoken. These prophets called God's people to repentance, justice, faithfulness, and hope, revealing His heart amid crisis and change. Though written long ago, their words still resonate, challenging us to trust God, seek His kingdom, and live faithfully. Over the next six days, we will connect these ancient prophecies to the New Testament and our daily lives, showing that God's character has never changed — and neither has His call to His people.
