Apostolic Church: Behind the Text

As the mission moves west into Europe, the evidence of God’s dramatic intervention is unmistakable. The diversity of people he touches reflects the mix we saw in the ministry of Christ. They all find their way into a new “household of faith”—a very concrete idea for 1st century people.

The Role of Women

Women would have typically handled hospitality, logistics, and child care. There was no “children’s church,” and the meals were a focal point of gatherings. The management of these issues alone would have placed female responsibilities at the center of every gathering. But business women were also patrons of churches, and in some cases, they were the primary household figure who was associated with the church “in her home” (Col 4:15; cf Acts 12:12; 16:40).
