The Easter Storyਨਮੂਨਾ

Surrender in the Struggle
Easter is a celebration of victory, of Jesus defeating sin and death. But before the resurrection came deep suffering. Before the empty tomb, there was the cross. And before the cross, there was the garden.
The Garden of Gethsemane was where Jesus prepared for what was coming. It was the night before His crucifixion, and He knew what awaited Him: betrayal, torture, and death. Here’s what Jesus had to say about the mental, emotional, and physical toll of what was about to happen:
... “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. ...” Matthew 26:38 NIV
Jesus fell to the ground and prayed, asking God if there was another way.
... “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” Matthew 26:42 NIV
This moment gives us a glimpse into Jesus’ humanity. He wasn’t just going through the motions as an emotionally distant deity. He felt the full horror of what was coming. At the same time, He also showed us what true obedience looks like. Instead of running, He surrendered.
The story of Easter isn’t just about Jesus’ suffering—it’s about His loving obedience to the Father. In the garden, He chose to say “yes” to the cross because He loves us. He surrendered so we could be saved.
And this is where it becomes personal. Following Jesus means that we surrender, too. We all have things we hold tightly—our plans, our comfort, our control. Jesus’ prayer in the garden teaches us that surrendering to God doesn’t mean life will be easy. Instead, surrender leads to purpose, growing closer to God for the good of others.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for choosing to go to the cross for me. When I feel overwhelmed, help me remember Your example in the garden. Teach me to trust You, even when surrender is hard. Amen.
Challenge: What’s one thing you’re holding on to that God might be asking you to surrender? Maybe it’s a fear, a decision, or a part of your life you don’t want to give up. Today, take a moment to pray like Jesus did—honest, open, and willing to trust God’s plan over your own. For more on surrendering to God’s plan, check out this article.
