7 Days to the Joy of Empty Nest: By Jennifer Maggioਨਮੂਨਾ

Serve
The Savior of the world washed feet. Who can you serve?
You have spent twenty years of your life serving children. You have likely made all the doctor's appointments, did the dental cleanings, bought all the toiletries, and cooked all the meals. You coordinated carpools, served as room mom at the school, and helped with homework. You have been serving! Moms are servant leaders, no doubt.
Use the skills the Lord has given you to serve others. Your children no longer need you in the same way, but someone needs help. Here are a few ideas:
- Throw a meal in the slow cooker for a family in need. (There are many dishes you can make for under $10).
- Bake a dozen cookies for a local fire or police department.
- Write “thank you” cards to our military or service personnel.
- Call a new widow or single mom and invite her for dinner.
- Babysit a friend's children one weekend so she can get away.
- Buy groceries for a family.
- Commit to visiting a nursing home once per month.
- Take the time to mail a handwritten letter to a family member, old friend, or former teacher who has meant a lot to you. Take time to share fond memories you have about them.
- Participate in a homeless outreach by making care bags for your city's homeless, including small toiletries, washcloths, blankets, etc.
- Launch a new single moms’ ministry at your church.
Points to Ponder:
- What are some outreaches or ministries at your church that you’ve never visited? Plan to engage in three new ministries to identify where you may fit.

About this Plan

I began dreading an empty nest on the first day of my son's junior year. (Yep, that early.) I knew it was coming. No one had prepared me for it. Who was I, apart from being a mother? I had to rediscover myself all over again. And guess what? I did and lived to not only tell you about it but rejoice with you in this very exciting new season!
