The Comparison Game vs. True Contentment: A Devotional for the Family

You are new! The word for “new” in today’s verse is kainos, which means “something just made that is unlike anything else in existence.” When you become a child of God, you are made into an entirely new creation. And you’re unique, unlike anyone else.

We often compare ourselves to others, which leads to unrealistic expectations and discontentment. Comparison almost always reveals our brokenness, making us feel dissatisfied with ourselves.

However, God made each of us. He created us all to be unique in our intelligence, bodies, success, discipline, and so on. To be dissatisfied with ourselves is to be dissatisfied with God’s creation.

To become content with who we are, we need to swap lies for truth. Psalms 139:16 (NIV) says, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

We need to stop looking to others for validation. Instead, remember that God made you unique. He didn’t create you to have the same gifts or traits as another person.

Pray and ask God to open your eyes so you can see yourself and others as he does: loved and valued.

As you seek God, he may call you to help others in your community or around the world understand his great love for them.
