Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus used the truth of Scripture to counter the devil’s lying attacks against him. But note this well: the devil used (or rathermisused) Scripture to tempt Jesus. Paul wrote to Timothy that Scripture is inspired by God, reveals the truth, exposes our sin, corrects our missteps, teaches us to do right and prepares us to do good (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Like all good and powerful things, Scripture can be misused, sometimes subtly, sometimes boldly. Subtle misuse is often more dangerous because it sounds so nearly true. As you read today, take note of how the devil subtly twisted Scripture to make it say what he wanted rather than what it really meant. How have you seen this happen? How can you protect against the dangerous subtleties of misused Scripture?
