DAY 3 OF 5

If you’ve experienced a hard time in your life, did someone ever tell you this: “God will never give you more than you can handle.”? Have you ever wondered where in the Bible it actually says that? Well, here’s the truth: it doesn’t. It’s simply not the truth. People seem to get the idea from a verse in 1 Corinthians that says, “And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.” This verse does say that God won’t give us more than we can handle…in the context of temptation, not the trials of life. The reality is that we’re humans- we can’t really handle that much, to begin with. So believing the lie that God won’t give us more than we can handle will only set us up for bitterness and anger at God in the future. But, this verse still provides us with another truth to cling to. When we are faced with temptation, God always gives us a way out. We will never face a temptation that overtakes us without our permission. God has equipped us with all the tools we need to stand up to temptation and say no when unwanted desires arise. So, the next time you’re faced with temptation, thank God for always providing a way to say no. He is with us, and no temptation is stronger than Him.

Challenge: What is a temptation you’re facing right now? Take a moment to tell God about it and ask him for strength when the temptation arises. Then, think of ways to avoid the temptation or verses to remember when facing that temptation.
