The first foreign missionary
On our best days it is easy to be a missionary, the days when you’re called to go to the exotic, popular places. But God’s compassion and love reaches out to every nation, not just the ones we’re most eager to go to. What would you do if God called you to go to a place which you really don’t want to go to? That happened to Jonah.
Jonah was a prophet in the northern Israel. This part of Israel was regularly under pressure from the Assyrian empire and from the great city of warrior Nineveh.
Jonah was the first missionary who was called by God to go to a new country to proclaim the word of God. And as that wasn’t enough, he was called to go to the scariest city of them all.
It falls easy for us to laugh at this defiant, reluctant prophet but what would you have done if you were in his place?
