Covenant + Law

DAY 7 OF 9

Did Israel keep the Law of God perfectly?

No. Israel failed to keep God’s law like they were supposed to. They could no longer show the world what God is like.

Though God had called Abraham’s family, Israel, and given them promises to bless them and to bless the world through them, they were taken into captivity in Egypt.

God rescued Israel from Egypt and led them through the Red Sea. And at Mount Sinai, God gave them the gift of the law through His servant, Moses. And as we talked about yesterday, Jesus later told us that the two most important commandments in that law were to love God with all your heart and to love others as yourself.

But even while Moses was receiving the law from God, the Israelites were already at the bottom of the mountain getting impatient. And they got so impatient that they decided to worship an idol. So, as God was giving His commandments to Moses, the Israelites were already breaking them. It’s easy to judge the Isrealites until we remember the times we’ve gotten impatient for God to show up and we looked for other ways to accomplish what we wanted.

Because Israel broke the covenant God had made with them, they suffered the consequences of sin. They were separated from God and, eventually, God punished them by sending them into exile.

Have you ever experienced the consequences of sin and felt separated from God? It’s very painful and confusing to experience separation from our source of life and joy.

But sin doesn’t have the last word. Exile and separation from God isn’t the end of the story. God promises to deal with sin, to rescue us, and to restore our relationship with Him.

Spend some time in prayer today asking God what you are doing or thinking that separates you from Him so that you can repent or turn around. Ask Him to forgive you and provide you with the power to follow Him as you draw closer to Him.
