Mindfulness is niet iets nieuws. Het fenomeen vindt zijn oorsprong in het boeddhisme en is al zo’n 2500 jaar oud. Al is boeddhisme officieel geen godsdienst, je kan je misschien wel voorstellen dat een (zoektocht naar) god misschien ook wel iets te maken heeft met mindfulness. Het principe van mindfulness is in het christendom ook niet onbesproken gebleven. Is mindfulness misschien geen uitvinding van boeddhisten, maar van God zelf?
