Als God liefde is, waarom staat Hij lijden toe? Hoe zit het met het “niet-morele kwaad”? Het kwaad waar wij als mens geen tot weinig invloed op hebben. Denk aan kinderen met ernstige ziektes, natuurrampen, of voedseltekorten. Waarom dat, God? Als Hij bestaat en almachtig is, had Hij dit toch kunnen voorkomen? Reden om niet te geloven?
