The Life of David

DAY 13 OF 28

Day 13: 1 Sam. 25 x Joe + Kim Galindo, Elders at UPPERROOM When we look at life today, we see a world of contrasts: good versus evil, light versus darkness, pleasure versus pain, hope versus despair, faith versus fear, peace versus panic, and many, many others. That world of contrasts certainly existed for David from when he was anointed to become King until the day he died. It must have been great confusion for David to serve King Saul so powerfully and successfully yet be hated by Saul to the point where Saul sought to kill him. When David’s men asked a favor of Nabal after having protected his vast array of sheep and goats, they were rudely addressed by Nabal. It was at this point that David reacted wrongfully and intended to kill Nabal. If he had done so, he would have become like Saul, who was living a life of jealousy, anger, rage, and taking offense. In God’s gracious oversight, Abigail (Nabal’s wife) came forth, recognizing the contrast between taking vengeance, which would shed blood, and making a peace offering that allows God’s better ways to prevail. In the end, justice was served as Nabal was struck dead, and David married the wise and caring Abigail. So, the question for us is very often: As we face various contrasts in our lives, will we recognize them for what they are and choose the way of the Holy Spirit or the ways of the world and the flesh? Psalm 139:23-24 – “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Prayer: O Lord, may I see my heart and mind clearly regarding the contrasts I face in my life. When I want to take matters into my own hands and satisfy my soulish desires, will YOU lead me in the everlasting ways by the power of the Holy Spirit? Yes, Lord! Today, I choose the ways of YOU versus the ways of the world. In Jesus’ name, amen!
