Who Is God: Devotions From Time of Grace

Immanuel, God, you are with us

Does it ever bother you that you are invited to worship a God that you can’t see? If there really is a divine Maker of this world, why doesn’t he hang around to let us get to know him? God’s seeming absence from this planet has led some to fear that we are all alone here and that there is nobody and nothing greater than man.

Ah, but that’s not so. The Bible says that at just the right time, God took on human flesh and entered our lives. The prophet Isaiah says that the Child born through a wondrous virgin birth should be called Immanuel, which means “God is with us.” “The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (7:14).

Next time you feel isolated and alone, fearful that nobody is listening when you pray, just whisper, “Immanuel, God, you are with us!”
