My Big Mouth
Titus 3
“I’ve got a big mouth!” It’s a long-time, well-loved quote from a classic television sitcom called the Honeymooners, set in the 1950s. In it, a bus driver named Ralph Cramden (played by actor Jackie Gleason) works hard to survive life in Brooklyn along with his level-headed wife Alice (Audrey Meadows), who endures his hair-brained schemes for getting ahead. They say hilarious things to each other and end in an embrace with each show. In real life, however, putting each other down does damage.
The problem of a big mouth is not something only people in a classic sitcom deal with. In real life, a big mouth can lead to struggles. The Bible addresses the matter of the mouth profusely. It tells us that life and death are in the power of what we say (Proverbs 18:21). In Titus 3, God warns us not to slander, speak evil of, or provoke others to arguments (Titus 3:2). Why is God so concerned with what we say?
Our words have power. We are made in the image of God and our ability to verbalize sets us apart from all other creation. What we say has potential. If we speak well and use our words to build up, we reflect God and advance His Kingdom. When we use our words to discourage, insult, or tear down, we will give an account for that verbiage.
As women we often have the capacity to say more than our male counterparts; with that comes responsibility. Our Savior, Jesus—the Word of God—came to save and deliver us from our former broken selves. Now we can use our words to say “big mouth” things—but for God! We can use words to show respect and communicate love.
What are you saying lately and how are you saying it? Pray for the Father to give you a mouth to speak for Him.
