Redemption and Ruth

Today, we see a beautiful redemption story in the book of Ruth. Starting when a devastating famine is underway, the story unfolds as Naomi and her family escape to Moab to survive. But her husband and sons die there, leaving Naomi and her daughters-in-law alone (Ruth 1:1-5).

As widows, Naomi and Ruth are especially vulnerable and have little hope for their future. Even worse, Naomi’s family land in Israel—which would be passed down from one male to another—is now in jeopardy.

Naomi returns to her hometown, Bethlehem, when she hears news about the famine ending. And Ruth decides to bind herself to Naomi, promising to stay with her for life—no matter what happens (Ruth 1:16-17). Ruth’s courage and love catch the attention of Boaz, Naomi’s “kinsman-redeemer” (Ruth 2:5-6, 20-21). As a close relative, Boaz is able to redeem the property that belonged to Naomi’s deceased husband.

Boaz accepts the kinsman-redeemer responsibility, buying back Naomi’s land and marrying Ruth. Together, Ruth and Boaz provide security for Naomi and bear a son who will continue the family lineage that eventually leads to King David (Ruth 4:22).

Naomi’s story begins with loss and suffering, but God brings redemption through the loyalty of Ruth and Boaz.

Reflection Exercises:

• The video emphasizes the fact that the book of Ruth hardly ever mentions God and never shows God speaking (which is rare in the Hebrew Bible). How does this affect how we understand God’s role in the story? (Hint: Review the final two minutes of the video.)
• How does Boaz’ role as a "kinsman-redeemer,” along with Ruth’s loyal love, transform Naomi’s story?
