The Unique Ministry of Motherhood

There is a mom hero in the Bible who continues to stand out to me as a role model. My heart is drawn to Jochebed, mother of Moses. This brave woman was a slave in ancient Egypt, yet when Pharaoh decreed that all Hebrew baby boys be killed, she could not see her beautiful baby boy slaughtered.

In making a life raft and setting Moses in the basket to float among the reeds, Jochebed demonstrated the fierce protectiveness of a mother's heart. Her desire was that he would be saved, even if she could never raise him herself. Yet God did immeasurably more than she could have imagined.

The hand that rocks the cradle holds the heart of the child. Even though Jochebed likely never saw Moses again after his early childhood, she held that boy's heart for his entire life. The wealth and power of Egypt was no match for the mark of Jochebed's love on Moses' heart.

When Moses saw injustice, he instinctively sided with the Hebrew people - his mother's people. The foundation of love, faith, and identity that Jochebed established in those precious early years shaped the greatest leader in Hebrew history.

Jochebed had a divine mission from God. Her son Moses became the leader of the Israelite people and one of the central figures of the Old Testament. God did not just choose Moses, He chose Jochebed as well.

Reflection Question: What foundational truths are you establishing in your child's heart that will guide them throughout their entire life?
