Give thanks! God is almighty

“I give You thanks, O LORD with my whole heart; before the gods I sing Your praise” (Psalm 138:1 ESV).

David thanked God singing, kneeling and praying. The word ‘gods’ or ‘elohim’ (vs. 1) can denote heavenly beings with God. It can also mean rulers on earth. David wanted heaven and earth to hear how good God is. To do something with your whole heart means that you are completely full of something and want to give it all your attention. David's heart was completely full of God's goodness. Despite all the enemies, worries, guilt and shame, God's goodness and faithfulness ran like a thread of love through David's life.

Psalm 138 can be divided into 3 parts:

• verse 1-3: Thanking God for who He is
• verse 4-6: Calling rulers to recognize God's greatness
• verse 7-8: Trusting in God's help and goodness

Did David often doubt himself in difficult circumstances? We don’t know, but how would you feel? David's certainty was: God will finish the work He has begun in me and He will never abandon me. Every day we need God's grace. Every day God wants to give it. Join me in singing: "I will praise You with all my heart"!
