The Cry That Points to God

Throughout these days, we've heard the cry of the soul in different forms: in an individual's lament, in a people's search, in the longing for lost beauty, and in the voice of an artist and their audience. Each of these cries, even when it seems to come from chaos or pain, points to a fundamental longing for redemption. And it is here that we find the definitive answer.

The Bible presents Jesus as God's perfect artistic expression. The Gospel of John calls him the "Word" (Logos). “In the beginning was the Word [...] Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1, 3, NIV). Christ is not merely an artist; He is the very Art of God, through whom all things were created.

Colossians reinforces this image, calling Christ “the Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created” (Colossians 1:15-16, NIV). This means that when an artist creates something beautiful, they are, even unknowingly, echoing the work of the Supreme Artist. When a love song describes a self-giving love, when a character finds forgiveness after a great failure, or when a superhero story moves us with its sacrifice, all these narratives reflect the greater story of the Gospel.

Art is, therefore, a gift that connects us with God's creativity, a window that helps us understand the human heart, and a foretaste of the beauty that will one day be fully restored. May we have ears to hear not only the cry of art but the voice of God speaking through it.

From now on, when you encounter a work of art that touches you, may your first reaction be to ask in prayer, "Lord, what fragment of Your truth or beauty can I see here?" Transform your appreciation of art into an ongoing dialogue with the Supreme Artist.
