Faith That Follows, Not Just Speaks

Somewhere along the way, modern Christianity got soft. A cheap gospel has been preached—one that tells people they’re saved because they repeated a prayer, not because they repented of sin, submitted to Christ, or actually started following Him. But salvation isn’t about saying the right words one time—it’s about a life changed by grace and marked by growth. The real gospel doesn’t just get you out of Hell—it gets the hell out of you.

This watered-down version of faith has led many to believe they’re Heaven-bound simply because they once prayed a prayer, with no real intention of living under Jesus’ Lordship or growing in Christlikeness. The tragic result? Crowds who’ve been to church, checked the religious boxes, and yet live like hell—assuming they’ll die and wake up in Heaven. Are they truly saved? Only Jesus knows. “But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.’” (2 Timothy 2:19, ESV)

That’s why we don’t judge the salvation of others, but we absolutely must judge ourselves. Paul commands it: “Let a person examine himself… if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.” (1 Corinthians 11:28, 31, ESV) Since we will all stand before the Lord in judgment, we should judge ourselves daily, repenting of sin, checking our hearts, and staying ready. That’s the warning of Hebrews: don’t presume on grace. Fear God. Hate sin. Keep maturing. Don’t drift.

The true Christian runs the race all the way to the finish line. As Hebrews says, “…if indeed we hold fast… [knowing] we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” (Hebrews 3:6, 14, ESV)

It’s not about whether you went to church, prayed a prayer, or called yourself a Christian. It’s about whether your life gives evidence of being transformed by Jesus. God knows who is His, and His people run from sin and run to Him. Don’t play games with grace. Examine yourself, repent daily, and finish strong.
