Here’s Your Sign

One of our sons had been talking about his school concert for months. He attends a preschool for children with special needs, and the teachers have been lovingly preparing their classes for months. Still, I slumped in my seat in the concert hall, shouldering the weight of my fears. I was overcome with the sheer possibility of our son feeling like he was physically unable to do something he really wanted to do - a familiar kind of torment for him.

The concert started with a parade of children, each holding a sign with a message much more relevant than their diagnoses. They marched up to the stage, waving signs over themselves and dancing to the song, "This is Me". Each sign was unique to the child, boldly proclaiming a positive identity statement. Our son said, "I can do anything."

My dread turned to joyful weeping as little eyes locked with parents’ and lit up. Little hands waved truths they could not say for themselves. Teachers they trusted tended to them on stage so they could remain completely present in the largest moment of their lives.

My husband explained to our son on the way home that his "I can do anything" banner is in the Bible. It's an absolute truth from Truth Himself. We can do anything through Christ, who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13) No obstacle is too great for our God, not for those kids or for us.

Jesus is our banner, the Truth we carry as we go. We can be our whole, perfectly created selves when we wave Him high. We can do hard things, shine in the process, and be fully present as we travail with the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
