Listening to God

It was the third day of the wedding celebration, and the host had run out of wine. We’re not sure why Mary, the mother of Jesus, asked Him to intervene and help, but we read of Jesus’s reluctance to perform this first miracle: “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

Reading the scripture passage, it is possible that Mary ignored Jesus’s comment, pushed the envelope, and forged ahead. Fortunately for the wedding guests, Jesus performed his first recorded miracle—providing the best wine of the wedding.

For us as well, it is good to “do whatever he tells us.” One of the first steps in this process is to hear what He is saying to us. To hear, we need to listen. God speaks to us in a variety of ways:

  1. His Word. Are you in the Word daily?
  2. His Holy Spirit. Do you keep your attention ready to hear from God’s Spirit as you move through your day?
  3. Other Christians. What do your Christian friends have to say that can help you on your journey?
  4. Non-Christians. How can God use you to minister to people you know and meet who might not have a personal relationship with Him?

Reflection:

What is God saying to you today?

What will you do to obey?

May we all have “ears to hear” and “hearts to obey.”
