Ezekiel: For His Glory

49 ദിവസത്തിൽ 39 ദിവസം

Within the flow of the book of Ezekiel, chapters 38–39 appear out of place. Chapters 33–48 generally concern the restoration of Israel. Yet chapters 38–39 are reminiscent of the oracles against the nations that we find in chapters 25–32. So how do they fit in their current location?

Chapters 38–39 concern the defeat and disposal of Gog from the land of Magog. The exact identification of this enemy is not clear, but the prophecy is set in the future since Gog and his allies arm themselves for an assault against God’s people, who have settled back in the land (vv. 1–9). From the start it is clear that God is controlling this conflict as He draws these seven allies out, each from the corners of the then-known world (v. 4; cf. v. 16). These hordes will want to plunder Israel for their wealth, now that God’s people dwell securely under His blessing (vv. 10–13).

In response, God will rise up to protect His people (vv. 14–23). Gog will become an object lesson for the surrounding nations, as they recognize His power and His commitment to His people (vv. 14–16). God’s anger and jealousy are aroused again, this time against Israel’s enemies (vv. 18–19). His judgment against the allies is described in cosmic and universal terms; this is not a normal battle (vv. 19–22). The typical divine judgments mostly experienced by Israel are now turned against the enemy. Finally, the Lord’s greatness will be manifest among the nations by His protection of Israel (v. 23).

Following chapters 38–39 God will return to His temple. So these chapters set the stage for His dwelling in His sanctuary by securing true peace and safety for His people in the land.

Reflection

The New Testament interpretation of Gog of Magog in Revelation follows a similar movement. Gog and Magog concern the final battle between God and His enemies, occurring just before the final vision of the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev. 20–21). Throughout history, God’s enemies will threaten His people but the assurance is that God will win and His people will rest in security.
