Ezekiel: For His Gloryഉദാഹരണം

Most history is written from a particular perspective, and this passage is no different. In it, we find Israel’s history presented through the lens of idolatry.
The elders again seek a word from the Lord through Ezekiel (vv. 1–4). In response, they are confronted with a record of their forefathers’ abominations. Indeed, God asserts that they were idolatrous right from their origin (vv. 5–9). Even in Egypt, when He commanded Israel to get rid of their idols, they rebelled. The rebellion continued with the generation in the wilderness (vv. 10–17). This generation was given the Law so that they might live; sadly they rejected it and a generation died.
The following generation did not learn from the terrible example of their fathers (vv. 18–26). They continued the rejection of God’s Law and God even wanted to disperse them among the nations before they entered the Promised Land. Since Israel disregarded the Law, it led to their defilement and death.
As we anticipate, nothing changes once Israel is in the Promised Land (vv. 27–29). Life continues with idolatry practiced as usual. Then we fast-forward to the present (vv. 30–31). God addresses the current generation in exile and He declares that they are just the same. And God won’t allow idolators to enquire of Him (v. 31; cf. v 3; 14:3).
Nonetheless, there is hope for Israel (vv. 32–44). Yes, Israel will face God’s judgment again, just like in the wilderness. But after the purging judgment, a purified people will reenter the Land.
Israel’s history as presented by Ezekiel is one of sustained, unmitigated rebellion and idolatry. Repeatedly God wanted to put an end to Israel but each time He withholds His hand for the sake of His own reputation (vv. 8–9, 13–14, 22). Fortunately for Israel, God’s concern for His name overpowers His wrath – for there was and remains nothing that people can do to merit God’s grace (v. 44).
Reflection
Our personal history shows that we are just as unworthy of God’s mercy as the Israelites (e.g. Rom. 3:23). It is thus a great comfort to know that, in the end, God acts for the sake of His glory, not because of who we are or what we do.
