Godly Standards

Imagine your teacher asks you this question: Is your desk 30 inches wide? What would you use to find the measurement of your desk? A scale? A meter stick? A ruler?

To find out how many inches your desk is, you would need to use a ruler! The ruler is the standard you would need to use to know whether or not your desk is 30 inches wide. In life, the Bible is our standard we use to help us guide the choices we make.

The Bible can help you develop godly standards that can guide the choices you make. The Bible is not just a book — it is a tool that points you to Jesus and helps you make decisions and choices that honor Him.

Let’s look at the story of Deborah in the Bible. Israel’s small army was facing a huge enemy and the army seemed way too big to defeat. Although God had shown the people of Israel His faithfulness time after time and proved to Israel that they could put their trust in Him, the Israelites continued to disobey the Lord and not follow His standards.

Barak, Israel’s general, didn’t trust God, and wouldn’t go into battle without Deborah. Deborah, however, remembered God’s faithfulness and power. She set her standards according to God’s truth. Because she obeyed God, Israel won and was freed from slavery. Deborah got her standards from the right place — God!

In today’s episode of “Into The Light,” Glacia struggled to get her standards from the right place, and she made a mistake by getting angry and arguing. But, when she set her standards based on what her grandmother taught her, she was able to focus enough to team up with Leo so they could win the final battle. Listen to this clip!

Ask yourself: Jesus can help guide us in what we think, say, and do — which do you need to ask God to help you have better standards (make better choices)? Who’s someone you know who makes good choices with what they do and what they say?

Challenge yourself: The guidelines you use to make decisions should follow Jesus — not what’s popular. Deborah did not do what was popular; she listened to God and obeyed His Word. You can do this, too! Challenge yourself to memorize this month’s scripture (Ephesians 4:21-23 NLT), find a Bible reading plan, and spend time learning God’s Word. When you do this, you set your standards based on what God says.

Pray: God, thank You for giving us the Bible to help us learn more about You and how to measure our standards according to what Jesus would do instead of what’s popular. Please help me to find time to read, memorize, and learn more about You. Amen.
