Christians struggle. In the church, some don’t conform to the way of Christ in their actions or beliefs. They corrupt the church. Then some break away under a banner of “enlightened truth, “a better way,” “Spirit-filled,” or any number of other spiritual-sounding clichés to justify their actions. They can have a lot of pull on those they leave behind. Then there’s the world, the external forces seeking to entice, intimidate, mock, or tempt us to conform to an alternate way of life and worldview. This is the situation John writes into.
