Generous God

Who have you encountered God to be? In my life, I’ve had the tendency to see God as distant, angry, and someone who asks a lot of hard things. Where does this come from and how can we as people see God for who He truly is? 

There came a powerful shift in my life when I read The Furious Longing of God by Brennan Manning for the first time. Right at the beginning, Manning outlines some things that may happen within us when we begin to take the love of God seriously in our lives. 

One of them, for a reason beyond me, struck me hard. It reads, "Live with an awareness that the Father not only loves you but likes you.” The intimate nature of God is not something to be overlooked, but rather something we need to intentionally embrace. God cares for you. 

Saint Augustine said, “God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.” In my case, my mind sometimes is too full. I think that is true for many of us.  

• What is stopping you from receiving the care that God so lovingly offers you?  
• What is preventing you from accepting the need that is within you?  
• Do you struggle with “busyness”? Fear of the unknown? Pride? 

Share those things with Holy Spirit and humbly present what you need. Patience, rest, joy, community. God delights in giving, He is generous and intimate by nature.
