Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Immanuel, God with us. The fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy through the birth of Jesus is a hallmark of Matthew’s gospel. Matthew begins and ends his gospel with this thought: that Jesus is God’s intervention in the story of humanity to make Himself available and reachable for any and every person who would receive Him. God is not a distant God. He is with us.

“With” means: beside; alongside; together with; in the company of; amongst; in the midst of. We have a promise from God that Jesus is Immanuel, God Himself alongside us. We can attain the pleasure of His company simply because He made a way. We can be sure of this each and every day, including in this moment right now. Jesus Himself said, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Let’s reflect on that now and thank Jesus for the pleasure of His company.
