Main Idea: The Image of God

We’re told in the very beginning of the Bible that God made the whole created world, but that at the very end of that process He took special and particular care over His creation of the first humans: Adam and Eve. They were not created like everything else, by God simply speaking them into existence. Instead, He formed Adam from the dust of the earth, breathed His breath of life into him, and then made Eve from Adam’s rib. And we’re told why this special care was taken: because Adam and Eve are made in the image of God.

It is universally recognized that human life is uniquely valuable, that each person is more valuable than any animal, plant, or rock. Mankind is not merely another equal part of creation, but the pinnacle of it.

When you look in a mirror, you see an image of yourself. When God looks at the earth, that’s what He wants to see. He wants to see Himself reflected back since we are made in His image.

How do we reflect God? Well, there are multiple ways, but one important one is that we reflect His character. For instance, we are called to demonstrate love and truth, just as God is full of love and truth. We are the only creatures able to willingly do this. Similarly, like God, we are also eternal creatures. While the rest of the world won’t last forever, we will live forever.
