Christian Athlete, Work Together with Other Christians

"So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind" (Philippians 2:1-2 ESV).

Did you know the Latin root of the word competition is competere? It literally means “to strive together” or “to seek together.” Paul isn’t talking about competition here, but he is imploring the Philippians to be “one in spirit and of one mind” with him. He wants them to strive together. In other words, we’re on the same team, so let’s act like it. In sport, we can compete with (not against) other Christians and still honor each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.

To be clear, being “one in spirit” doesn’t mean we all have the same role or gift. Just like a team, unity doesn’t require uniformity. But it does requires humility. Great teams don’t thrive because everyone does the same thing. They thrive because each person does their part for the same purpose. The same is true in God’s family. We win when we pursue the same mission: Glorifying Christ.

That means celebrating others’ successes as much as your own, serving when no one is watching, and being willing to put the team before yourself. Christian athlete, the world divides and compares, but the gospel unites. When we work together in love and unity, we become a living testimony of what God’s Kingdom looks like in action.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you see other Christians in your sport as competitors or teammates in Christ?
  2. What’s one way you can help build unity where you compete?

Prayer to Consider:
Jesus, teach me to strive together with others who love You. Give me eyes to see them and the will to connect with them. Help me value unity over pride and teamwork over ego. For your glory, my joy, and the good of others. Amen.

10 Commandments for Athletes From Philippians

If we’re trying to integrate faith and sport using Paul’s letter to the Philippians, where do we turn? Probably Philippians 4:13. It’s one of the best (though often misused) verses for athletes. But the rest of the letter offers much to anyone involved in sports. Paul writes like a coach, calling his team to a high standard, getting right to the point—understandable since he’s writing from prison. Whether you call them commands, principles, or coaching points, Paul lays out a map for faithful living. This 10-day devotional journeys through 10 commands from Paul’s Philippian playbook.
