An Encounter With Jesus

Day 2: A Transformed Life

When we personally encounter Jesus, we can’t help but be changed, so I want to tell you about a woman who’s entire mentality was flipped when she encountered Him.

John 4 tells us of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, and the picture we have of her old life is not a very nice one. She comes to the well with her water jar, and here she sees Jesus. He begins talking to her, and as they talk, He receives insight from the Spirit into her life. He says that she has had five husbands — five — and she is currently living with another man who she is not married to.

If you or I were to hear something like that, we would probably think that she isn’t a very nice woman. We might think that she has probably hurt a lot of people. We’d think she probably isn’t very kind or faithful, so she must have a lot of enemies. She can’t stay married to anybody, so she probably has emotional problems.

How fortunate that the Savior — who does not see as humans see — found her. Jesus saw through all those problems that we would have seen, and He saw her real problem. Yes, her life was a mess. Yes, people in the city probably talked all about how terrible and unstable she was, but that wasn’t her problem.

Her problem was that she didn’t know the truth.

Jesus saw what she needed, and it was to have an encounter with Him, so He revealed Himself to this messy, horrible woman!

This is powerful, friend! She came to the well to get water, but then she met a man who knew everything about her life and talked to her anyway, a man who was the Savior of the whole world. She came for water, but then she had an encounter with Jesus, and she left that water pot behind. When she got up that day, that perishable water was the most important thing in her life, but she forgot all about it when she took hold of living water!

That is the power of an encounter with Christ. When you truly encounter Him, you leave behind those things that you thought were important. You leave behind anxiety, pride, and fear, because you become completely changed!

For Your Consideration

  • What is something that you left behind when you had an encounter with Jesus? Take a moment to thank Him that you no longer have to carry that.
  • Sometimes, we have an encounter, but then we go and pick back up the things that we once left behind. What is something you have picked back up that you need to leave behind again?
