What True Worship Costs

Devotion: Three hundred denarii. A year's wages. That's what Mary's worship cost. Not spare change. Not leftovers. Not what was convenient. Everything.

The disciples were quick with the math. "That could have fed the poor! Built a ministry! Done something productive!" Sound familiar? We're experts at calculating the cost of obedience and rationalizing why delayed obedience makes more sense.

But here's the truth: worship isn't measured by what makes sense. It's measured by what it costs.

Mary could have done the "wise" thing—sold the perfume, given to the poor, kept some for her future, and managed the blessing. Instead, she did the wasteful thing. She bankrupted herself for one moment of worship. No ROI. No financial plan. No security net.

True worship will always look wasteful to those who don't understand its worth. Your family will call it extreme. Your friends will call it foolish. Even church people will call it irresponsible. But Jesus calls it beautiful.

Worship that costs you nothing is worth nothing. If it doesn't cost you comfort, convenience, or control, it's not biblical worship—it's religious activity.

Maybe God is asking you to give your tithe when it doesn't make financial sense. To forgive when it's not fair. To obey when it's not comfortable. To go when you want to stay. To speak when silence is safer.

That's expensive worship. And it's the only kind Jesus accepts.

Declaration: "My worship costs me something. I will not give God what costs me nothing. I lay down my comfort, my convenience, my control—all for Jesus."

Prayer: "Lord, I confess I've given You leftover worship—cheap, convenient, calculated. Forgive me. I want to worship You with abandon, regardless of cost. Show me what You're asking me to lay down, and give me the courage to do it. In Jesus' name, amen."
