Convinced and Kind

When it comes to politics, do your words reflect your opinions or your mission?

When emotions are heightened around topics we’re passionate about, it’s easy to forget the wisdom found in James 1:20, "Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry, for human anger does not achieve God's righteousness.” Too often, we mix it up and instead, we're quick to assert our opinions, to prove our points, and to criticize those we disagree with. But where does that lead us? It only fuels division and animosity.

Even worse, during political seasons, we see believers criticizing other believers without attempting to understand their perspective, and they justify harsh words as “truth-telling.” But here’s the real truth: you can be convinced and kind at the same time. You can be convinced of what you believe on political issues and what God’s Word says—but you can also be kind.

Jesus didn't align Himself with any political party. He came to establish His Kingdom, one not of this world. As citizens of Heaven, we're called to embody the principles of that Kingdom—to live in the world but not be of the world. He chose and appointed us. Not for the sake of engaging in political debates or social media arguments, but so that we may bear fruit that lasts: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

In a world filled with division and strife, our role as ambassadors of Christ is even more crucial. We are called to embody the values of the Kingdom we represent. Our words and actions carry weight and should mirror the attitude of Christ Himself. When the world is fighting to make a point—we can point people to God. When everyone points out problems, we can point people to the solution–Jesus.

So, as we navigate political conversations, let's remember our real identity: not just Americans but—more importantly—ambassadors of Christ. We've been entrusted with the message of reconciliation, tasked with bringing God’s light and healing to a broken world. We can be convinced of His Word and His ways…and we can also be kind.

Prayer:

God, I thank you that I can be convinced and still be kind. Help me to live out my passion for your ways, but also shine your light through my words, love, and attitude. Help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Jesus & Politics: A 5-Day Devotional

Politics. It’s a touchy subject…even when it isn't an election season. Differences of opinion can lead to division between friends, family members, and even within the Church. We need to remember as believers that while difference is inevitable, division is a choice. In this 5-day devotional from Todd Mullins (Senior Pastor of Christ Fellowship Church), you will be challenged to ask yourself who you will be when faced with differences, and how you can go about choosing love over division.
