Faithful to Prepare a Place
Yesterday we talked about Jesus's promise of the Holy Spirit. I don't know about you but I need all the help I can get as I journey through this broken world and have only my weakened human condition to get me safely to the other side. Oh, but there's Jesus, His finished work, and the ultimate Helper--the Holy Spirit. What a wonderful Helper! My husband often says, "We are not citizens of earth, on our way to Heaven. We are citizens of Heaven, just passing through earth."
I love the sound of that: I am a citizen of Heaven.
I may live down here below, but I am on my way to my eternal Home, one day at a time. You and I were built for Eden, but because of the entrance of sin, we live in a fallen, corrupt place, bogged down by sin, sickness, and hopelessness. As the apostle Paul wrote, "...our spirits groan to put on our heavenly dwelling." (2 Corinthians 5:2)
He expanded that thought in Romans 8:18-25:
"18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience." (ESV)
How do we know that heaven is being prepared? Because Jesus told us so before He ascended back to the Father. Let's return once again to John 14, beginning in verse 2:
"2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” (ESV)
While there are many Scriptures that encourage us to prepare for our eternal Home, there remains such a mystery about Heaven's makeup. What we can know is this: nothing can compare, and it's being built with your perfect joy and peace in mind. What we also know is that we don't want to miss it! Hebrews tells us there's a great crowd of witnesses, cheering us onward to receive this heavenly prize. John the Revelator described Heaven as a place loaded with no pain, no tears, no grief and devoid of evildoers, murders, lying, and immorality.
God is faithful to prepare a place for you that is beyond compare to anything grand you or I have experienced on planet earth. In fact, God will eventually wad up the breathtaking majesties of this present earth and toss it away, creating a new heaven and a new earth. That sounds like something we can't afford to miss! He's preparing a place; are you preparing your heart?
