The Misty Garden

Salvation stands at the very center of the Christian story: a breathtaking, unearned gift from God. Paul declares in Romans, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is glorious, joyful, and yet scandalous.

Have you taken a moment to reflect on what it truly means to be saved?

All too often, we take salvation for granted. We grow accustomed to the words, yet remain distant from their weight, like glancing at a masterpiece from across the gallery, never stepping close enough to notice the brushstrokes and vibrant detail.

God’s salvation was never meant to be treated lightly. It is rich, layered, and multidimensional: too vast for any single phrase to capture. Author Peter Macky compares it to a misty garden enclosed by high walls with small windows:

“You move around the wall, taking mental photographs of the view from each window… By the time you return to your starting point, some fog has lifted, and you notice perspectives you missed the first time… Taken together, these ‘snapshots’ form a collage of splendor far surpassing the beauty of the individual images.”

Each biblical image of salvation is a window, revealing a unique angle of God’s grace. No single view tells the whole story, but together they unveil the depth of His love and His rescue.

Hold this truth close: God wants you and the whole world to know His salvation. It isn’t a side note; it is the very heartbeat of His will for your life. As Hebrews reminds us, “This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit” (Hebrews 2:3-4). God’s saving work in Christ is no secret.

This week, step into salvation like Macky’s misty garden. Walk it slowly. Gaze through every window. Marvel at the depth of God’s grace until your heart is stirred anew. Drink deeply of His salvation, and let it set your faith ablaze again.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation, rich, unearned, and overflowing with Your grace. Open my eyes to see its depth and beauty, and help me marvel at every facet of Your love. May I walk daily in the wonder of Your rescue, letting it ignite my faith. Draw me closer, remind me of Your mercy, and let Your salvation fill my heart completely.
