The Passion

Nothing infuriates me more than having someone tell you what to do when they had no right to do so. It's a shameful and very human reaction I have.

However, following direction hits differently when the person giving instructions has actual authority.

That’s the scene we see played out here. The religious leaders are furious that Jesus is telling them what to do, and they demand that Jesus prove Himself:

Who gave you the right to do this?

But Jesus doesn’t play their game. He knows exactly where His authority comes from. We read in John 5:19 (ESV):

The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

Jesus wasn’t just a good teacher—He was the living embodiment of the Father’s will. Every word He spoke carried divine authority, not borrowed, but entrusted to Him by God.

Imagine if someone walked into your workplace and started changing your systems, rewriting policies, and flipping tables in the break room. You’d think, “Umm… who gave you the right?”

But if that person was the CEO, sent directly to fix a broken and toxic culture, suddenly the challenge isn’t their authority—it’s your willingness to accept it.

If you’ve ever asked: “Can I trust Jesus?” or “What gives Him the right to speak into my life?”, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: Jesus doesn’t force you to believe. He just invites you to look at the evidence: His life, His words, His cross, His resurrection, and above all, the love He walked in. He’s not just showing up to “mess with your life.” He’s come in the authority of the Father to clear out what’s fake, heal what’s broken, and lead you in truth.

The Father didn’t send a messenger: He sent His Son. Jesus doesn’t need to prove Himself; He’s been given full authority by the Father. Will you trust Him?

Jesus, help me see you clearly as the Son sent by the Father. Where I’ve questioned your authority, meet me with truth. Where I’ve resisted your voice, please soften my heart. Teach me to trust that you’re not here to control me, but to lead me in love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today, ponder this: What does it look like to trust Jesus as the one sent by the Father? Have you let Him speak into every area of your life, or are there parts you still hold back?
