From Lost to Loved: A 30-Day Study of Romans 8

While living in Jerusalem, I had a friend whose father held a high position in an embassy. Because of diplomatic immunity, his family was untouchable by local law. I remember him ripping up parking tickets and weaving through traffic on his motorcycle. He treated his father’s standing as a license for arrogance.

Many believers read Romans 8:31–32 the same way. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” becomes a slogan for presumption. “He will graciously give us all things” is twisted into entitlement. Yet Paul is not handing out immunity papers for reckless living. The test of whether these verses are read rightly is whether they bring you to humble worship or arrogant triumphalism.

Paul’s point is clear. If God has already done the unimaginable by not sparing His own Son, then you can trust Him in whatever you face. His argument uses a fortiori logic, reasoning from the greater to the lesser: His incomparably great gift secures all else. Paul’s question “who can be against us?” does not deny the presence of opposition but declares its ultimate futility before God’s verdict.

So let us sit in that reality. God gave the Son, not merely a son. John 3:16–17 reminds us He was sent to save, not condemn. That is not a distant flannel-board memory from Sunday school but the victorious vantage point for every season of life.

Here is the danger: lose sight of the cross and you cut loose the very anchor that secures every other promise. Presumption creeps in. Fear follows close behind. But when you remember the cost, two things happen. First, entitlement withers. You stop demanding because you see how lavish God has been. Second, insecurity is chased away. You stop doubting because you see how far He has gone.

And here the Spirit does His work. Romans 8:16 told us He bears witness that we are children of God. That witness is not abstract. He refuses to let Christ’s sacrifice drift into the past. He makes it present, living, unshakable. He testifies with authority that if the Father has given His Son, then you are His and nothing can undo it.

The cross strangles presumption, and the Spirit silences insecurity. The logic of the cross is meant to end in worship, not entitlement. God has given His Son. He will not fail to give you what you need to be conformed to Him.

REFLECT:
Does your understanding of Romans 8:31-32 cause you to bargain with God or bow before Him?
