God Is in Controlಮಾದರಿ

Day 22: Confidence by Faith Alone
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
Faith is at once simple and profound. It is merely the outstretched hand that receives what grace offers. It adds nothing, achieves nothing. And yet, how often we complicate what God has made so clear! We want to contribute something substantial, but faith is not currency. It is merely the channel through which we receive God's gift.
Many believers live in anguish over the "quality" of their faith: Is it strong enough? Real enough? Do I have enough faith? But Paul reminds us that even faith is a gift. It is not born from a hidden reservoir of spiritual strength within us. It is a gift given along with salvation.
Consider someone drowning. The life jacket does not depend on the strength of the castaway, but on the power of the one who throws it. The act of holding on is not the cause of salvation, only the means of receiving it. So it is with faith: it does not save; Christ saves through it.
This is why Paul writes "by faith." Grace is the source; faith, the channel. This distinction is vital because it prevents the error of relying on our own trust instead of trusting in Christ.
Doubts will come, and not infrequently. But when they do, don't look at the strength of your faith, look at the faithfulness of the One in whom you believe. A small faith in a great Savior is worth infinitely more than a great faith in yourself. Even a trembling faith, like a candle in the wind, is enough, because what shines is not the candle, but the flame. And Christ is the flame that never goes out.
Salvation is only secure because it rests entirely in God's hands. Your feelings change, your faith wavers, your circumstances fluctuate, but His sovereign purpose does not change. He who called you is faithful and will sustain you to the end.
My Prayer:
Father, I thank You that my salvation does not rest on the strength of my faith, but on Your faithfulness. When doubts surround me, turn my eyes away from myself and fix them on You. Teach me to remember that faith is but the open hand that receives Your gift. I trust not in my trust, but in You, who are completely trustworthy. May my faith be a window into Your glory, not a mirror of my weakness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Questions to Reflect:
1. When you doubt, do you tend to examine your faith or the faithfulness of Christ?
2. How does understanding that faith is a gift from God change your view of its role in salvation?
