Mary and Martha

Jesus was coming to Mary and Martha's home, and Martha wanted to make everything just right. She was doing what most of us would probably do—trying to have food prepared and everything in order, serving and working to show love in a tangible way.

But her sister Mary wasn’t helping. She was sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening, while Martha scrambled to hold everything together. Finally, Martha had had enough and asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her.

What Martha got instead was a gentle correction. Jesus didn’t scold her for working—he saw her effort, but he also saw her anxiety, her distraction, and the way she had missed the most important part. While Martha had chosen to busy herself with tasks, Mary had chosen to simply listen and be present with Jesus.

It’s easy to relate to Martha. Life gets full, and there’s always something that feels urgent. We have tasks to complete, expectations to meet, and we convince ourselves that all this hustling is for the right reasons.

But busyness can crowd out what matters most. The invitation of Jesus is often simple but hard to accept: Come sit. Stop for a moment. Listen. Slow down and be near Him.

Today, check your pace. Ask yourself what’s driving you. Is it fear of falling behind? Pressure to keep everyone happy? Or have you forgotten the one thing that really matters. Take time today to pause and be still with Jesus. Even just a few minutes of undistracted presence can reset your heart in ways no completed task ever could.
