When Hope Hurts: Miscarriage and Faithಮಾದರಿ

Reclaiming Your Expectation After Miscarriage
Pregnancy after miscarriage requires another level of faithful expectation.
I got pregnant in the same month as my first miscarriage the year before. Anytime I felt cramps or a discharge, I immediately thought about my previous miscarriages and desperately tried to remember the early signs. Checking for blood every time I went to the toilet and fearing any feeling of wetness in my underwear.
I experienced moments of overwhelming anxiety and panic.
I struggled to enjoy and fully trust the process.
Then I came across an old post I had written in 2021, which said:
“Don’t let experience be the enemy of expectation.”
We absolutely learn through experience.
But this same process can cause us to lower our expectations or stop hoping altogether by projecting past ‘negative’ experiences onto un-lived futures.
Experience is a teacher, but it can also be a thief if you let it.
You might be using your past experience as an excuse to close yourself off from exciting, positive, God-ordained opportunities. You might have said, “I’m never going to have children” in response to a past miscarriage, discounting God’s ability to heal, restore and grant us our desires in His sovereign way.
Today, we surrender all fear of the future to the One who holds the future.
Where fear and panic have crept in, we are choosing holy ignorance, walking by faith and not by sight, walking by His promises, not our feelings.
Today, we are intentionally protecting our ear gates, because we know that faith comes by hearing… and so does doubt.
We pray:
God, give us wisdom on how to navigate the days, months, and years after miscarriage. Watch over our mouths so that we speak life even during periods of loss. Forgive us for making deterministic assumptions about the future based on our experience. Thank You for giving us ‘free will’ to choose Your perfect will for our lives. The Author and Finisher of our faith, we trust You with our story.

Miscarriage is a wound that is often carried in silence, but with a heart full of questions. In this devotional, I share a journey of two miscarriages and the lament, doubt, faith and the hope that followed. Whether you’ve experienced a miscarriage or are walking alongside someone who has, I pray that through honest lament and hope restored, you will encounter the God who sees, heals and rebuilds from the ruins.
