Who Am I, Really? Discovering the You God Had in Mind

“If I’m no longer the Managing Director… who am I?” Those were Joe’s words.

Joe was one of my coaching clients. After decades of climbing the corporate ladder, he’d reached the top. Managing Director. But as retirement loomed, he found himself staring into a frightening void. Without the title, the power, the recognition, he no longer knew who he was.

On his way up, Joe had lost two marriages. His children had distanced themselves so completely that some had even changed their surnames to erase him from their lives.

Have you ever introduced yourself by what you do rather than who you are? “I’m a doctor… a mother… a student… an entrepreneur…” We often define ourselves by our roles, relationships, or achievements. But what happens when those things change or disappear?

Like Joe, many of us eventually come to a point where we ask, “Who am I, really?” And if we don’t have a firm answer, we end up building our lives on shifting sand.

In Genesis 1:26–27, God says something astonishing:

“Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” So God created mankind in His own image… male and female He created them.

And in John 10:10, Jesus declares:

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Your true identity isn’t something you have to earn, perform for, or protect. It was declared over you from the beginning: you are made in God’s image. You were created on purpose, for a purpose.

When we forget that, we drift. We start clinging to fragile labels - job titles, accomplishments, appearance, applause. But all of those fade.

Your job isn’t who you are.
Your relationship status isn’t who you are.
Even your failures aren’t who you are.

You are a reflection of the Creator. You carry His likeness. That’s your truest identity.

Who you believe you are will shape everything: your choices, your relationships, your legacy. When your identity isn’t rooted in God, you end up chasing the wrong priorities and living beneath your potential. When you align with who He says you are, you begin to walk in power, peace, and purpose.

Joe lost sight of who he was without the role. But God never lost sight of Joe. And He hasn’t lost sight of you. Jesus didn’t just come to forgive you, He came to restore your identity and lead you into the fullness of life you were created for.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Where have you been finding your identity lately?
  • What would shift if you rooted your self-worth in being God’s image-bearer instead of your performance or others’ approval?

This week, speak life over yourself. Say it out loud:

“I am created in the image of God. I am not a mistake. I am called to live a full life in Christ.”

Prayer

Father God, I don’t want to build my life on shaky foundations. Help me see You clearly, so I can see myself rightly. Teach me to root my identity in Your truth—that I am made in Your image, loved, chosen, and called to fullness in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you’re made in God’s image, what dreams did He plant in your heart? Tomorrow, we’ll explore the desires that can point you toward your purpose.
