We’ve reflected on how to identify unsafe relationships, but the other side of this journey is just as important: learning how to become safe people ourselves. A safe person is someone who loves deeply, not motivated by fear, control, or a need for affirmation. In Romans 12, Paul paints a bold and beautiful picture of this kind of life—genuine love, honoring others, extending forgiveness, living in harmony, rejoicing and grieving together, even blessing those who hurt us.

This sounds beautiful, but how is it actually possible? It begins with finding our security in Christ. Only when we are rooted in Him can we love authentically, cease striving to prove our worth, and release our attempts to control others. We won’t always get this right—we will fail, repent, and be restored—but as Christ transforms us, we can grow into people who bring safety and love into our relationships. There may be no greater gift to those around you than becoming a safe person whose presence reflects Christ Himself.

Practically, this means surrounding ourselves with other safe people who can guide and encourage us. Invite feedback, especially from those who know you well and want your growth. Pay attention to your reactions—do you slip into controlling, defensive, or approval-seeking patterns? When you do, confess it, ask forgiveness, and seek accountability. The more you practice humility, honesty, and grace, the more you become the kind of person others can trust. As we seek God’s wisdom for our relationships, we can be encouraged that we are already on the journey of becoming a safe person for those around us.

Pray: Lord, in You true security and worth are found. Help me to love others out of the overflow of Your love for me. Teach me to be a safe presence for those around me.
