God, give us wisdom in our words and kindness in our tone.

I’m blessed with one of the coolest positions (in my opinion) within the Awesome Marriage ministry. I am Director of Care Support, and occasionally I get the opportunity to write YouVersion plans like this one. One of the very top questions and prayer requests I get in my inbox is how do I communicate without it turning into an argument. God’s word tells us point blank in Proverbs 15:1 (NIV) that “a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

That’s how you do it- with gentle, kind, and understanding words, avoiding harsh tones and even defensive body language.

How quickly I tend to match the energy of my husband, specifically in a heated conversation. If I feel offended, I’m quick to defend. If my husband’s temperature and tone are running hot, mine is likely to match his even if I’m not feeling frustrated at all.

Based on my inbox, it sounds like I’m not the only one who struggles with this. But those responses aren’t biblical and they aren’t helpful for diffusing whatever is brewing at the time. Let’s use God’s Word as the standard for our communication and let’s pray that our communication would be just one of the ways our marriage honors him.

Dear Heavenly Father, please help my tone, my attitude, and my body language to bring about peace, connection, and restoration in my marriage.
