The Chosen and Friends: God With Usಮಾದರಿ

Where Were You?
From Annie F. Downs
It’s a heartbreaking moment for Martha and Jesus that John recorded for us to read. Her desperation comes through. The clip shows us the wrinkled brow and tear-stained cheeks as she simply says, “If you had been here.”
Martha knew Jesus was capable of the miraculous, and that’s what she was thinking about when she lamented His absence. But she also knew He loved her and her family. His presence, she believed, would have changed the outcome. But His love for them would have held her in ways she needed.
“If You had been here...”
It’s a fair sentiment—so fair that Martha’s sister Mary repeats it(v. 32).
When you wonder in a story why you are wandering in a story...
If the presence of Jesus is what you need most but feel it lacking—because you need a miracle, or comfort, or help...
If a moment passes that you thought would be different...
...bring to Jesus the same sentiment as Martha’s and Mary’s.
But I would change it to a question.
“Where were You?”
And let Him answer.
Because as we see in this story, His answers seem to be filled with compassion, hope, and glimpses of the miraculous.
