Continuing in Judges chapter 4.

And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; and the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim” Judges 4:2 NASB.

The term ‘sold’ here refers to God handing over or allowing the Israelites to be subjected to oppression by their enemies. King Jabin was the reigning ruler of Canaan and lived in the city of Hazor. It is interesting to note that Hazor had been defeated by Joshua 170 years prior (Joshua 11). Yet we see (Judges 4:2) that once again Israel’s foe, left unchecked, has become strong and powerful. This brings to mind Jesus’ words in Luke 11:24-26: “When the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it then says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they come in and live there; and the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first.”

Whether due to pride or spiritual laziness, a foe left unchecked will bring destruction. As believers, spiritual vigilance is paramount. Yes, it requires effort. No, it is not easy.

But praise God, we are not alone in this earthly trial! We have been given the Holy Spirit as Guide and Companion. And as Brothers & Sisters in Christ, we are a part of the Body of Christ, whereby we carry one another’s burdens and are edified to run our race with perseverance!

Let us pause and reflect. Invite the Holy Spirit into this time.

- What am I actively doing in my spiritual walk to remain vigilant?

- Meditate on Proverbs 4:23 (read each version, speak aloud each word with deliberation, repeat the process, sit in silence, and tune your heart and ears to hear from God).

  • Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (NIV).
  • Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. (NASB).
  • Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (ESV)

Tomorrow, we continue the journey through Judges 4.
