The Passover is almost here. It’s only days before Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus is eating dinner with Simon the Leper. While reclining at the table, a woman approaches and pours pure nard on Jesus’ head. The whole house is filled with the fragrance. A beautiful, extravagant gesture of love and adoration is interrupted by the mercenary act of another. “Why this waste?” Mark 14:4. Jesus knows the motives of each one’s heart. He weighs the act of worship against the self-seeking statement and promotes the woman’s selfless action to the annals of history.
